8.3 EARTHQUKE IN CHILE SANTIAGO……… PERU TSUNAMI WARNING
A strong earthquake
of 8.3 magnitude occurred in and near Santiago on 16th at 7:54p.m.
Due to this earthquake the entire coastal region of Chile and adjoining country
Peru has been issued a Tsunami warning and the announcement has also been made
in Hawaii. As the buildings in Santiago got powerfully shaken by the earthquake thousands of residential
people came out on streets in fear which has lead to a big fuss. But, Chile
government has revealed that the details of the total damage and in juried
people in affected area are still not definite due to unstable situation and
communication. Initially the USGS reported that the magnitude of earthquake is
7.9 but suddenly it increased it to 8.3 magnitude. According to the USGS, the
estimated magnitude of the earthquake in the north-west is 228 km away from
Santiago and only 5 km depth at the coast of Pacific Ocean. On the other side
Chile government has estimated that the epicenter was 500 km of north of
Santiago with the depth of 11 km. The tremor was also felt in the capital city
of Argentina which was at the distance of 1400 km. A few minutes after severe
shocks, it was reported by the government that the magnitude of the earthquake was
two times more than 6.0 Richter scale. After the earthquake the Chile
government issued an evacuation order as there could be Tsunami near coast of
Chile at 11p.m. The earthquake frequently occur in a large magnitude in Chile
because it is connected to the earthquake zone of Pacific Rim which is also
known as the “The ring of fire”. In 1960, more than 5000 people died in the
central part of Chile due to 9.5 Richter Scale of earthquake and , as expected
Chile was recently hit by a magnitude of 8.8 Richter Scale in Feb,2010.
