A strong 8.3 magnitude earthquake near Santiago, Chile, occurred at 7:54 pm (local time).
The earthquake in Chile triggered a tsunami warning in the coastal States and neighboring countries of Peru and a tsunami warning has been down in Hawaii.
In addition, thousands of villagers who were horrified by the strong shaking of buildings in downtown Santiago suddenly jumped out into the streets and there was a great disturbance to evacuate.
However, the Chilean government said the casualties and specific damage were not reported yet due to the unstable situation in the area.
The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the earthquake magnitude was 7.9, and immediately rose to 8.3. According to the USGS, the epicenter is the Pacific coast, 228 km northwest of Santiago. The depth of the epicenter is only 5 km.
The University of Chile estimated the epicenter to be 500 km north of Santiago and 11 km deep.
The quake caused a strong vibration in Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, 1,400 km away from Chile.
It was reported that at least two more strong aftershocks of magnitude 6.0 or greater were reported a few minutes after the earthquake.
The Chilean government ordered the evacuation of tsunamis by coastal residents, saying the tsunami could hit the coast by 11 pm.
Chile is a ring of fire, and a major earthquake occurs frequently. More than 5,000 people have been killed in central Chile in the 1960 earthquake of 9.5. Recently, an earthquake of magnitude 8.8 in February 2010 hit Chile.
