On 16th at 7:54 pm (local
time) earth quake of magnitude 8.3 struck vicinity of Chile's capital Santiago.
Due to this Tsunami warning
has been issued in coastal areas of neighboring country Peru and an advisory
has been also issued in Hawaii island of the USA .
In Santiago buildings started
trembling and millions of afraid people came running out on road
and created chaos.
Chilean government announced
that due to unstable communication system in affected area the loss of people
and property is not yet available.
USGS initially reported
magnitude to be 7.9 but sooner it upgraded to 8.3. According to USGS the epicenter
is located in coast of pacific ocean 228 km away from north west of
Santiago and depth was 5 km.
Chilean government announced
that epicenter was 500 km away to the north west of Santiago and depth was 11 km
.
Vibrations were also felt in Buenos Aires (the capital city of
Argentina) and is 1400 km away.
Few minutes after the earth
quake two powerful after shocks of magnitude 6.0 was experienced.Chilean government issued an
advisory to evacuate the pacific coastal area as they are chances of tsunami
hitting the coasts by 11 pm.
Chile experiences frequent
earth quake as it is located in high risk seismic zone of Pacific rim aka
rings of fire. In 1960 Chile experienced earthquake of magnitude 9.5 which
resulted loss of 5000 lives in central Chile. Recently in Feb,2010 Chile
experienced an earthquake of magnitude 8.8 .
