STRONG EARTHQUAKE OF 8.3 MAGNITUDE HITS CHILE… TRIGGERS TSUNAMI ALERTS TILL PERU

A powerful earthquake of 8.3 magnitude hits nearby regions of Santiago, capital of Chile on 16th at 7:54 PM.
Due to this earthquake, Tsunami alerts were issued in all coastal areas of Chile as well as its neighboring country Peru. Tsunami advisories were also issued in Hawaii, USA.
Also, as the buildings of the Santiago city were strongly shaken, more than thousands of fear-stricken people came out running from their houses for evacuation because of which a chaos was created.
The Chile government has informed that due to the unstable communication services in those specific areas, the detailed report of injuries and damages is not known yet.
The US Geological Survey (USGS) had initially reported the earthquake to be of 7.9 magnitude but they immediately upgraded it to 8.3 magnitude. According to USGS, the epicenter of the earthquake is about 228 Km away from North-West Santiago, in the coast of pacific ocean and the origin of the seismic activity is about 5 Km deep.
The Chile University estimated the epicenter of the earthquake to be 500 Km north of Santiago and the depth of the seismic activity to be 11 Km.
Due to this earthquake, strong vibrations were triggered even in Buenos Aires, Argentina which is 1400 Km away from Chile.
A few minutes after the occurrence of this devastating earthquake, at least 2 aftershocks of over 6 magnitudes were reported. The Chile government issued an evacuation order for the residents of the coastal areas stating that due to this strong earthquake, a Tsunami could hit the country’s coast at around 11 PM.
There are frequent occurrences of high magnitude earthquakes in Chile because of its location in highly earthquake prone zone of the Pacific Rim also known as “The Ring of Fire”. In 1960, more than 5000 people were killed in central Chile because of a 9.5 magnitude strong earthquake. Recently, in February 2010, an 8.8 magnitude earthquake also hit Chile.
