On 16th at 7:54 P.M a strong earthquake of magnitude 8.3 occurred in vicinity of capital city of Chile, Santiago.
Because of earthquake in the entire seacoast of Chile and in neighbouring country of Peru an alert of tsunami was issued, in Hawaii island of US also tsunami advisory has been issued.
As building were strongly shaken in city of Santiago, thousands of people ran out on streets and this created a big chaos.
Due to unstable condition of communication in affected area the Chile government revealed that the report of detailed damage and injured persons cannot be made available.
USGS initially announced that the magnitude of earthquake was 7.9 but immediately raised it to 8.3.
According to USGS, the epicentre was located at the coast of Pacific Ocean, 228 km away from Santiago toward north-west and epicentre was at 500 km away from Santiago towards north and epicentre was just 5 km deep.
Chile university stated that epicentre was at 500 km away from Santiago towards north and depth was estimated to be 11 km.
The strong vibrations triggered by the earthquake in Chile were also detected in capital city of Santiago, Buenos Aires which was 1400 km away.
It was reported that atleast two strong after shocks of magnitude 6.0 has occurred after few minutes of earthquake.
The Chile government issued an order for the evacuation of all the people in the neighbourhood of coastal area stating that a tsunami could hit the coastal area at around 11 P.M.
High magnitude earthquakes frequently occur at Chile because it is situated in earthquake zone of Pacific RIM known as ‘Ring of Fire’ .
In 1960 chile experienced earthquake of magnitude 9.5 which resulted loss of 5000 lives in central chile.
Recently in feb ,2010 chile experienced an earthquake of magnitude 8.8.
