"A strong magnitude earthquake of 8.3 richter scale in the capital city of Chille; tsunami warning in Peru."
On 16th at 7.54 p.m. the capital city of Cille and its nearby places experienced a atrong earthquake with a magnitude of 8.3. After the earthquake a warning of tsunami has been issued in the entire coast of Chille and the neighbouring country Peru. Also tsunami advisory has been issued in Hawai.
The quake was so strong that the buildings of Santiago were strongly shaken and thousands of people panickingly ran out to the streets and a big chaos was occured. But Chille government revealed that due to unstable communication, detailed reports could not be made of hhe affected area.
The USGS said that the magnitude of the earthquake was 7.9 and immediately raised it to 8.3. According to them the epicentre was detected 228km North-west away at the coast of pacific ocean and the depth was just 5km.
Chille university estimated that epicentre was 500 km away towards North-west of santiago with a depth of 11km.
The earthquake caused a strong vibration in Buenos Aires, the capital city of Argentina, 140km away from Chile. It was reported that at least 2 more aftershocks of magnitude 6.0 or greater were reported a few minutes after the earthquake. Chilean government ordered the evacuation of the residents of coastal areas, saying the tsunami would hit the coast at 11 p.m.. Im september 1960, more than 5000 people died in central Chile due to a strong earthquake. A magnitude of 8.8 in february 2010 followed in Chile.
